Google Reader Speaks Up!

Google has done it again, they have given us a way for our Android powered phones to read the news to us, out loud. It's an application called Talking RSS Reader. This app retrieves articles from your Google Reader subscriptions and speaks them out loud. It is the handiest thing on the planet for drivers, joggers, and commuters in general. The Talking RSS Reader application reads articles out loud using the Android text-to-speech engine.

Even the menus and dialogs are clearly spoken. If your eyes aren't quite as strong as they once were, you may find this a helpful tool for keeping up with the news. Those blessed with good eyesight can easily follow along as well, because the text of the sentence currently being spoken shows in color on the screen. The Talking RSS Reader application integrates smoothly with the Google Reader service.

The touchscreen buttons for skipping articles are located so that you can change RSS feeds without ever having to look at your phone. Now you can stay informed of "what's Happening," as it happens, whether your traveling or jogging or whatever your doing when your mobile. For the developers reading this, Google has made the source code for the application available at Google Code.
