Google Voice-Voicemails Unsearchable

There were some reports floating around the internet this week about Google Voice voicemails being searchable online. This caught my attention since I use Google Voice. It appears that a handful of users somehow unknowingly published the URL they received with the email notification of a new voicemail message, to the internet.

Apparently the URL was picked up by the search engines and the messages were readable online. This is very rare, in fact Google is only aware of around 30 incidents. When you have millions of voicemails being delivered this may seem insignificant. Google hasn't taken that approach, in fact, they have now made it so that even if a user chooses to include this unique URL in a public website, it will remain unsearchable.

If you want to publicize a Google Voice message on your website, Google will provide you with a special embed code for that purpose. Visitors to your site will then have the ability to listen to that particular message, but the message itself will remain unsearchable. So, for all you Google Voice users out there, rest easy, Google is on top of it. If you don't have Google Voice, read here to find out how to get Google Voice.
