Nambu is tr.imming Down
Nambu Network, the Mac iPhone application developer, has announced a change in their previous decision to shut down their url shortening service tr.im. They have decided instead, to keep the service running, but to release it's operation to the public.
Excited? Well, you should be, you could have your very own URL shortener. It's true, the Nambu Network will be releasing tr.im, it's URL shortener, to the public in as soon as 10 days. How does it feel to "almost" own your own URL shortener? What is a URL shortener? Ever heard of bit.ly? If not, have you ever heard of Twitter?
Twitter, the micro-messaging site partnered with bit.ly to enable those short messages, so that even as URLs are growing longer, bit.ly makes it possible to include a url in your Twitter message by shortening the original url. This allows you to add those mile long URLs to your 140 character messages.
Now the Nambu Network will renounce all ownership in the tr.im domain name and donate it to the community. The source code used to implement tr.im will be released to the public under the MIT open-source license.
tr.im will also add the capability for anyone to use their own domain name on the tr.im platform. What that means is, you can have your very own branded URL shortener. Even though it is completely free, they will be accepting donations to help defray the operating costs. That sounds fair enough. So in a couple weeks we could all own our own version of tr.im, wow, I'm excited. What do you think? Leave a comment.
