Update Your Drupal Website!
Keeping your Drupal website up to date is very important for a hassle free operation. If you have update status enabled you're halfway there, the other half is actually doing the update.
I'm as guilty as the next guy with my procrastinating, but I realize through experience, that timely updates are necessary. Many Drupallers feel they don't have the time, so I'm here to show how easy it can be.
You must have a continuous backup system to begin with, so that if anything should happen, you will have a recent copy of your database and server files . This "Drupal How To" is a quick method for upgrading contributed modules not core modules or version upgrades, for complete details on all upgrades, and additional information, click here Drupal Upgrade.
The first step, after you're notified of a module update, is to download the updated file to a folder on your home or office computer, I have a folder reserved for updates. Always make sure you are logged in as "user 1" when updating so you have full admin rights.
Use 7zip to unpackage the module update into your update folder. I use Filezilla as my FTP interface. Most Ftps are very similar. When you attempt to upload a file with ftp and the file already exists on the server, when you click "upload" on Filezilla, a popup titled...Target file already exists...will pop up.
You will see many options to check on the popup, you should check...Apply to current queue only...then the entire contents of the module folder will be uploaded and will overwrite the existing module folder on your Drupal website host server.
After you complete this step, go to the "Available Updates" page of your Drupal website, refresh the page and the module should be updated. To complete the procedure run update.php to update your database and you're done.
