Craig's List-In The Beginning
In The Beginning There Was Craig's List
In the beginning of the internet, there was a lot of empty space in cyberspace. It was then that Craig Newmark had his epiphany, he would compile a list, and he would name it, get ready for this...Craig's List. Craig began Craig's List in San Fransisco in 1995. It was perfect timing because the mid 90's was a period of time when the public was joining the internet in huge numbers.
Computers had become affordable and the average family was buying them up like hotcakes. Internet access was still done through 14k and 28k modems but it didn't matter because things moved much slower in those days. Broadband wasn't around like it is today, but it wasn't required like it is today, in most cases.
"Craig's List" Or Craigslist?
Craig's List ( The correct spelling is actually, "Craigslist", as in Craigslist.com or Craigslist.org). Craigslist began as a "mailing list" in the early 90's and started using the majordomo software shortly thereafter. This was one of the main reasons for Craigslist's rapid expansion.
The unmoderated Craigslist grew quickly in popularity in it's San Fransisco environs. When Jim Buckmaster joined Craigslist, as lead programmer and CTO, around the turn of the century (2000), things really started to heat up. Buckmaster brought so much to the table, Craig made him CEO in less than a year...good choice.
Craigslist The Global "Local" Classifieds
Apart from it's global expansion, the website has remained essentially the same friendly local mailing list that grew up in that apartment on Cole street in San Fransisco's Sunset District. Of course you can't grow into a worldwide "local" classified advertiser without gaining a certain amount of notoriety on your own.
Here are a few of the recent reports in Google about Craigslist.
